Licensing

Ocean produces two types of templates: open-source Liquid files distributed freely to the Shopify community, and the full Template Library accessible via an Ocean subscription. This page explains what you can and cannot do with each.

1.Two Types of Templates

Ocean creates and distributes Shopify theme templates in two forms:

TypeWhat it isHow you access it
Open-source templatesSelf-contained Liquid files (prefixed ocean-*) that work in any Shopify theme via copy-paste. Distributed publicly on GitHub and our website.Free — no account required
Template LibraryFull library of section templates and blocks, accessed and inserted via the Ocean editor. Includes the Ocean brand system integration.Ocean subscription required

Different license terms apply to each. Both types remain our intellectual property — you receive a license to use them, not ownership of the files.

2.Open-Source Template License

Individual open-source template files (identifiable by the ocean- prefix and the <!-- ocean-template --> marker comment) are licensed under the following terms.

You may

  • Use templates in Shopify stores — your own or your clients' — with no limit on the number of stores or projects
  • Modify templates to suit your project's requirements
  • Deliver modified templates to clients as part of a paid Shopify project or agency engagement
  • Combine templates with other code to build a complete Shopify theme

You may not

  • Redistribute the collection. You may not publish, distribute, or make available three or more Ocean templates together as a collection — whether free or paid, modified or unmodified.
  • Build a competing template library. You may not use Ocean templates, individually or in aggregate, as the basis of a Shopify template library, component library, or design system that you offer to third parties — commercially or otherwise.
  • Resell individual templates. You may not sell Ocean template files as standalone products on any marketplace (Shopify Theme Store, ThemeForest, Gumroad, etc.) or via private channels.
  • Remove attribution markers. You may not remove or alter the ocean- prefix from file or class names, or remove the <!-- ocean-template --> marker comment from the template source.

In plain terms: use templates freely for building Shopify stores — yours or clients'. Don't package them up and distribute or sell them as your own product.

3.Template Library (Subscription)

Access to the full Template Library is governed by your Ocean Terms of Service and your active subscription. The key terms that apply to subscription templates:

  • You may use templates inserted via the Ocean editor to build Shopify themes for yourself or your clients, across unlimited stores within your subscription plan limits
  • Themes already published to Shopify stores continue to work after your subscription ends — you retain the published code
  • You may not extract, download, or export raw template source files from the Ocean editor for use outside Ocean
  • All redistribution, resale, and competing library restrictions from the open-source license above also apply

The Template Library section of the Terms of Service contains the full legal language.

4.Attribution and Markers

Ocean template files include identifying markers that must be preserved:

  • File prefix: ocean-*.liquid (e.g. ocean-hero-1.liquid)
  • CSS class namespace: ocean-block-* and ocean-section-*
  • Template marker: <!-- ocean-template --> comment in the Liquid source

You are free to add your own classes, modify styling, and extend functionality. Preserving these markers is not about credit — it is a license condition that allows us to identify misuse and protect the integrity of the template ecosystem.

5.Intellectual Property

All Ocean templates — including their HTML structure, Liquid logic, CSS architecture, block schemas, design patterns, and naming conventions — are our proprietary intellectual property, protected under applicable copyright and IP laws.

Original designs only. Ocean templates are designed from scratch and do not incorporate third-party template code. Our ocean- namespace and block architecture are original works.

Themes you build using Ocean templates are your property. We claim no ownership over the Shopify themes and stores you create.

6.Enforcement

We take IP protection seriously. Ocean template files contain embedded identifiers that allow us to detect unauthorized redistribution or copying.

If we identify a violation of this license:

  • We will contact the responsible party and request immediate remediation
  • For subscription users, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate access per the Terms of Service
  • For third parties, we reserve all legal remedies available under applicable intellectual property law

If you have questions about whether a specific use is permitted, email us before proceeding: support@oceaneditor.com.
